What is Agility?

What is Agility - learn a little more about agility and our Club

Agililty began 26 years ago in 1978, when it was used as a novelty event beween the main events at Crufts Dog Show. Interest was immediate and a number of clubs were soon established and competitions started.

In an agility competition a handler and dog negotiating a series of up to 20 obstacles, arranged into a course by the judge, as accurately as possible and in the fastest time possible and the most accurate and fastest dog and handler win.

A jumping course includes a number of jumps together with all or any of the following - a floppy or rigid tunnel, a tyre, weave poles or long jump.
Agility courses may include all or any of the previous equipment together with ‘contact equipment’ a dog walk, an A frame, a see- saw. The dog has to touch the contact - the areas painted in a different colour, on the bottom of the equipment otherwise they get faulted. There are different competitions dependent upon the size of the dog – large, medium and small and the grade of the dog between Grade 1 and Grade 7.

There are now a large number of clubs throughout the country and indeed internationally.
We are a Kennel Club registered club which means we run under Kennel Club rules and are part of a network of clubs throughout the country.
We have been in existence since 1991 and welcome all dogs, whatever their size or breed or ability.
Each year we run a 3 day show at the Westmorland Show Ground which attracts entries from all over the country.

The focus of our club is on agility and we hold club competitions for all members, whatever their ability, during the summer. We also have a number of social activities throughout the year for members and their partners and friends.
